Horsemanship 101
This 1 day course is ideal for those with little or no experience with horses. You will learn how to approach a horse safely and become comfortable around them as well as learning to groom and tack-up correctly. You will be introduced to the Dually Training Halter and learn how to apply Monty’s non-violent concepts on the ground while learning how to lead a horse correctly. Padraic will give a Join-Up demonstration to enable you to understand how important it is to become acquainted with the basics of horsemanship. This is an excellent chance to become more comfortable around horses before signing up for a Join-Up or Introductory Course.

Introductory Course
of Horsemanship
The Introductory Course is the first step to gain an in-depth understanding of Monty’s concepts. Students from various equine backgrounds are welcome to take part, as there are no prerequisites. To those of you with little or no horse knowledge, we recommend prior participation in the Horsemanship 101 Course. The Introductory Course is designed to provide you with a well-rounded knowledge in general horsemanship in the basics of horse performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on horse psychology. As the foundation of Monty’s work and a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, you will learn the method of Join-Up as it relates to various environments. You will have the opportunity to build your skills in Dually Training Halter work, long lining, herding exercises and loading.
These two weeks consist of hands-on experience as well as theories in horse psychology. Following this you will return home to complete several months of distance learning modules and field study (submitted via video for Padraic to critique).
It is during the field study period that you learn about horse performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition through a distance-learning program. Then you will return for practical and written exams, at the successful completion of which you will graduate from the Introductory Program. Graduates of the Introductory Course are offered the opportunity to continue their education by completing the Advanced Course at Flag Is Up Farm in California and, upon personal selection by Monty, the Instructors’ Internship. Only Certified Instructors are able to teach, demonstrate and advertise their services for monetary gain.
This course may be changed to a 1 week very intensive for small groups (maximum of 3 participants). Cost includes a 500+ page manual, video critique and a one month subscription to Equus Online University to support your continuing education in Monty’s Methods.
Modular Option
The Introductory Course is also offered in a modular format, with each short course counting towards completion of the training program. These can be completed at your own pace, in order to fit in with your work/lifestyle requirements and can if needed, be arranged privately
Join-Up
This 4 day course is your chance to come and learn Monty’s world famous Join-Up technique. It will provide you with the foundation of the language called “Equus” through demonstrations and practical round pen sessions. Learn how to establish a trust based partnership with your horse based on choice. How subtle changes in your body language can have dramatic effects on the behaviour/actions of your horse. Begin to “read” your horse so you can spot problems before they escalate. This will help with your confidence whether you are on the ground or in the saddle. You will also learn about the Dually Training Halter and how to establish good rules and boundaries for your horse. This course can be combined with the other modular courses to count towards the Monty Roberts Introductory Certificate of Horsemanship.

Long – Lining
This 2 day course will be your introduction into long-lining or double line lunging. Learn why long-lining is better than lunging. How long lining can become a valuable tool in your training sessions. Through practical demonstrations, round pen and classroom sessions you will learn this incredibly useful skill which will help with all your ground training. It helps develop correct and balanced movement of the horse and much more… This course can be combined with the other modular courses to count towards the Monty Roberts Introductory Certificate of Horsemanship.
Key Learning Points Non-violent approach to working with a horse, the language of ‘EQUUS’, benefits of long lining with two lines, disadvantages of single line lunging, tacking up and attaching double long lines, working the horse on double long lines, different speeds and directions, different locations, ongoing double long line training.

Ground Manners
On this 2 days course you will learn invaluable tools that will have a dramatic impact on your horse’s ground manners and make you the effective leader that your horse needs. You will learn how very common owner “bad habits” and “bad timing” lead to many problems seen in horses, which can quickly escalate into much more serious/dangerous behaviour. If you own or have ever worked with a horse that barges/bites/kicks/rears/will not load into a trailer or lorry/is scared or of a nervous disposition, then this course is for you to find out why they behave the way they do.
You will learn about and how to use the Dually Training Halter correctly, and how to establish clear rules and boundaries for your horse. Begin to “read” your horse so you can spot potential issues before they escalate, this will help you gain confidence whether you are on the ground or in the saddle. The more a horse trusts you on the ground, the more trust and respect he will have for you when you are in the saddle. This course can be combined with the other modular courses to count towards the Monty Roberts Introductory Certificate of Horsemanship.

Horse Psychology
This 2 day course is designed to teach you how horses think and learn. Without knowing the basics of how horses think, respond to stimuli and store memories how are you going to be able to build a successful training session or even a relationship with your horse?. It consists of classroom as well as practical sessions. This course can be combined with the other modular courses to count towards the Monty Roberts Introductory Certificate of Horsemanship.

Horsemanship Clinic
Padraic will demonstrate how Monty’s Methods can be used effectively to help with handling horses in everyday situations eg. catching, leading, loading, the vet, the farrier, scary objects etc. See Join-Up (central to Monty’s Methods of dealing with horses in a non-violent way) in action.This one day clinic will help both you and your horse with any handling issues or problems you may have. Learn the importance of body language, how to control your breathing, helping both you and your horse to relax.
